Today we released the results of our third annual solar energy survey and we discovered that although still in the minority, a significant amount of American consumers would consider installing solar panels on their homes.

Applied Materials announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement under which Applied will acquire Varian for $63 per share in cash for a total price of approximately $4.9 billion on a fully-diluted basis.

Everyone knows that the transistors in a modern microprocessor are on the small side. So small, in fact, that it’s hard to get a grasp on the concept. Some of the critical film layers in the transistor are only a few atoms thick and well over a million transistors would fit inside the period at the end of this sentence.

In India, according to the World Bank, approximately 400 million people are without access to reliable electricity and an estimated 100,000 villages are without access to the national grid and receive no electricity. In these cases, the use of coal, kerosene, and other "dirty" fuel sources for power, cooking, and lighting provide energy with intermittent quality and reliability, as well as serious health and environmental concerns.

SEMICON/SOLARCON Russia, the largest annual gathering of Russian companies that supply equipment used to make semiconductors and photovoltaic solar modules, takes place this year in Moscow on May 31 to June 2. Applied Materials, the world’s largest equipment supplier to both markets, will exhibit independently for the first time — an indication of the company’s commitment to the Russian microelectronics industry and the growing strength of semiconductor and solar industries in Russia.
